Periodontal Treatments
Periodontal (gum) disease is a common dental problem. In fact, conservative estimates indicate that up to 80% of the population may unknowingly have some form of this bacterial infection. In addition to diminishing oral health, gum disease has been linked to systemic problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and more. Dr. Stewart offers comprehensive periodontal treatments to alleviate gum disease symptoms and revitalize whole-mouth health.
At your checkup or new patient visit, Dr. Stewart will thoroughly examine your gums. He'll look for bleeding, inflammation, and receding gums - key indicators of periodontal disease. If you don't have gum disease, great! Dr. Stewart and our hygienist can give you tips to prevent the infection and keep gums healthy and strong. If you do have gum disease, don't worry. We'll assess your situation and determine the therapies that are best suited to your needs.
Early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis, can often be relieved with a thorough cleaning and instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques. Gum disease that has advanced beyond gingivitis typically responds well to topical antibiotic therapy. Minor surgery may be needed to resolved advanced gum disease. If you require periodontal treatment beyond the scope of our services, we'll refer you to a gum disease specialist for the care you need.
